Job Purpose

Straughan is seeking a GIS Director to manage a strong team of GIS professionals, oversee a portfolio of diverse GIS projects, implement company-wide GIS best practices, and lead business development efforts to achieve our strategic plan. The GIS Director will work collaboratively fulfill our company’s mission of advancing sustainable and resilient communities. The position requires an ability to understand client needs and deliver creative solutions that utilize advantages of technology to improve efficiency, reliability, and communication.


Duties & Responsibilities

Project and Personnel Management

  • Management of multiple GIS projects for a variety of clients (federal government, transportation agencies, energy companies, local governments)
  • Responsive and supportive client management to achieve expectations and build relationships
  • Review invoices, prepare progress reports, monitor project cost/schedule/scope, negotiate modifications
  • Prepare project planning documents and resource plans
  • Conduct technical quality reviews
  • Achieve scope, schedule, and budget objectives
  • Manage a team of GIS professionals with clear and open communication, clear expectations, and timely feedback

GIS Best Practices

  • Lead the development and implementation of GIS standards and guidelines for the company
  • Train GIS users on best practices and new products
  • Implement processes for data visualization, reporting, collection, processing, and quality control

Business Development

  • Lead and support the development of proposals, presentations, work scopes, and budgets.
  • Meet with potential clients and teaming partners to develop new business.
  • Lead an internal initiative to grow Straughan’s GIS and technology services
  • Work collaboratively with other Straughan divisions to develop value added processes utilizing GIS technology


Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, or related field

Experience

·         10+ years of experience in the GIS Field.

·         In-depth knowledge of ESRI’s software, including ArcPro and extensions, ArcGIS Online, Python for ArcGIS, StoryMaps, and mobile applications such as FieldMaps and Survey123

·         Proficiency in basic computer applications, especially MS Office (Word, Excel, and Access).

·         Strong verbal, organizational and written communication skills.

·         Experience in mentoring, training GIS staff and other GIS users.

·         Ability to perform work outside under variable terrain and weather conditions.

·         Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and in an organized fashion.


Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Geography, GIS, or related field
  • GISP, PMP, or related certification
  • Experience and interest in emerging technologies
  • Drone piloting and sensor data collection and manipulation experience. Section 107 licensure desired
  • Experience working with local governments in the greater Baltimore-Washington area
  • Experience working with and/or management of Maryland DOT projects
  • Experience working with LiDAR data (aerial, mobile or terrestrial)
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, .NET, and Java
  • Experience with environmental regulations, permitting, and policy
  • Contributing member of professional organizations
